Fungi as collaborators? Artist Alexis Rakun shares how mushrooms inspire her creativity and healing 🍄🌀
This summer, we launched our #LegalizeMicrodosing storytelling series to highlight the voices & experiences shaping this movement.
Inspired by conversations with individuals whose lives have been transformed through microdosing, we’ve heard stories ranging from recovering after traumatic brain injuries, to finding hope after years of failed mental health treatments, and reigniting inner curiosity, creativity, and connection.
We set out to share these journeys to show how small doses can spark big changes and highlight the potential microdosing has to unlock human growth and creativity. Today’s interview is the perfect example:
Exploring the intersection of microdosing and art, Alexis Rakun shares how the practice inspires her work and fuels her creative process.
We spoke with Alexis, a renowned artist and entrepreneur who has spent decades refining her craft and inspiring a community of over 350,000 people. She takes us inside her creative world, showing how fungi shape her art and how microdosing continues to open new dimensions of creativity, connection, and magic. 👇
![]() | 1. How did you first discover microdosing? What led you to try it?“The first time I ever tried mushrooms (at all) was summer of 2022 in the rocky mountains of Denver, Colorado. I was visiting a best friend who had just started regularly microdosing to treat her PTSD. Ironically, I didn’t want to try them because I was afraid they’d give me anxiety. HA. But she reassured me that her experience had been quite the opposite. So she took me to a melted frozen glacier lake and it was simply the most magical, synchronistic, grounding and heart opening experience all at once.” |
“I think more than anything, microdosing helps me get out of my own head, and into my heart”
2. How has microdosing influenced the way you approach your art — from inspiration to execution?
“It’s a really good way to get an almost third-party, omnipotent perspective of yourself and life. Which is EXTREMELY healthy to life, creativity, and our own personal ways of thinking/being. It’s a pattern interruption. It’s a gentle yet radical little shift we need to “break through the fourth wall” of our own experiences.
As far as execution goes, I find it useful to let things flow, scribble out ideas and doodle concepts while microdosing (personally) versus really trying to hone on to some final version of a creation. I don’t love to be overly productive while microdosing — I prefer musing and ideating and surrendering to the whirls and whims that come.”
“Life is so worth living and striving for.”
3. In what ways has your relationship with yourself or the world around you evolved as a result of your microdosing journey?“I think I have always had a psychedelic nature to my creativity and personality, so it really feels very grounding to know that somehow, I’m in alignment with magic mushrooms as is. The absolute greatest, grandest, goldest, shiniest thing my experience with mushrooms has given me — is the hyperawareness of the miracles and love and abundance that exist around me, always. Tiny miracles truly are everywhere. And love can never leave us. Huge heart opener. And when you open your heart, the whole universe seems to open up to you.” | ![]() |
“Microdosing gives you a sparkly pair of sunglasses that allow you to view the world, people and yourself dazzle all around you. You see the hidden things. The hidden magic.”
4. For creatives who are curious about microdosing, what would you say? What do you wish you'd known before you started?
“I’d say any fear or anxiety that is keeping you from trying it out, is “a mile wide and an inch deep.” It isn’t real. I think going into secret doors and entering portals, as often as we can, is of vital importance to the evolution of our truest Selves and the transformation of our journey. You never know what you may find.
What if you finally realize what creative project or mission your heart has been calling you to this whole time? What if you get even a momentary glimpse past your ego to see the choices your highest self would make? Then you get to MAKE THEM after. The secret answers it can whisper to you, will stay with you forever.”
“I really am grateful to magic mushrooms for handing me that ultimate skeleton key to actual divine creation.”
5. Can you tell us the story behind your oracle deck? How did microdosing influence its vision, symbols, or creation process?
![]() | “I specifically used microdosing when writing the meaning of each card and illustration for the guided booklet, and the craziest, wildest, most visionary idea happened. Usually authors of oracle decks rely on symbols, archetypes, or traditional tarot influences… My deck has 44 unique cards spanning 2021–2023, each paired with art born from my own emotional reckoning at the time. I realized I needed to mentally and emotionally time travel to the space I was in when creating each piece. What was I going through? What did I need to hear? What was the key to reaching my next level? What hard truth did I need to swallow? |
That idea made all the difference, and I credit it for much of the deck’s global success and the hundreds of messages I’ve received about how it positively impacts people’s lives and the uncanny experiences of magic, signs, and synchronicities.”
