"Microdosing Is The Trojan Horse for Shifting Culture"

A documentary about microdosing? Filmmakers Maria Fernandez & Nicole Pritchett share how microdosing has shaped their storytelling 🍄

Meet Nicole Pritchett and Maria Fernandez, award-winning filmmakers who share how microdosing shaped their creative work, including projects with Nike, Paris Hilton, Steve Aoki, and more.

Nicole and Maria (Nikita and Bete) are the co-founders of Eclectic Media, an international bilingual production company. Two women whose lives were fundamentally transformed by microdosing, they channeled that experience into Microdose the Movie, a documentary featuring voices like Rick Doblin, Paul Stamets, Aubrey Marcus, and more.

In today’s chat, Nikita and Bete dive into how microdosing sparked creative flow, supported nervous system healing, and helped them tell a story that’s shifting the cultural conversation. Let’s dive in… 👇

1. Have you noticed any shifts in your relationship with yourself, your nervous system, or the world around you as a result of microdosing?

Nikita: “Oh, HELL yes. I went in expecting some magical productivity boost, but instead I got tapped into myself, sensually, which was not on my bingo card. Microdosing is like a box of chocolates… except you don’t get to pick the flavor. You just get the chocolate you actually need, even if it’s a weird one you didn’t know you liked.”

Bete: “Yes to all of the above! Microdosing was the number one tool that changed the way I live my life and how I approach all of my relationships including the one with myself. By being more present and less anxious I became a better friend, partner, daughter and person all around.”

“For me, microdosing is less about squeezing out more work and more about stripping away the layers of B.S. that keep me from being myself.”

2. What made you want to tell the story of microdosing on film? Was there a moment where it clicked that this needed to be a documentary?

Bete: “The number one thing that made me want to tell this story on film was how much my life changed and how fast that change happened. Within the first five weeks of microdosing I had made a 360 degree change in my habits both mentally and physically—I was eating better foods, I had less anxiety and I was more productive and kind than ever. Beyond my personal story what absolutely blew my mind was that this felt like the best kept secret that could transform the world and more so that it was a neuro adaptogenic medicine arguably good for everyone. I was a bit angry to be honest, I just couldn't believe that so many people are suffering and addicted to drugs that are killing them and I didn't know this existed before, so I had to do something about it. If even one person watches this film and transforms their life by getting to the root of their challenges and accessing the source, that’s a win!”

Nikita: “We knew right away we wanted to tell this story. Microdosing felt like the Trojan horse for shifting the cultural narrative around psychedelics, it's accessible, disarming, and sneaky in the best way. I might not get my mom to sit in a full mushroom ceremony, but I can get her to microdose and that's powerful. We've met people whose entire lives have changed from microdosing. It doesn't make logical sense, but it makes all the difference.”

3. How has microdosing changed the way you approach your work, from creative flow and intuition to decision-making or collaboration?

Nikita: “Is it a productivity hack? Sure, for some people. You might even prefer LSD for that. But for me, microdosing is less about squeezing out more work and more about stripping away the layers of B.S. that keep me from being myself. When I'm more me I'm naturally more creative, intuitive, and resourceful. Turns out the best workflow upgrade is just… showing up as the unfiltered version of yourself.”

Bete: “Microdosing changed everything really, it allowed me to observe more before reacting, think more before I speak and make decisions on the spot. It removed the anxiety and allowed me to make decisions one at a time which in turn made me a better collaborator and decision maker.”

“Microdosing has been like carrying around a tiny, plant based life coach who occasionally high fives my nervous system or cleans off the gunk. It’s special.”

4. What kinds of conversations are you hoping this film will open up? Around microdosing or anything else?

Bete: “I hope this film gives people insight to a world they may not know about and it opens up conversations and opportunities for healing for all kinds of people: people who are struggling, seemingly well people and everyone in between.”

Nikita: “The dream? That this film cracks open the conversation around psychedelics and helps more people get safe, legal access to these medicines. But honestly, even more than that, I hope it reminds people who they actually are. Psychedelics are like that brutally honest friend who tells you the truth but with love and if you're brave enough to listen, they'll hand you the keys back to yourself.”
